  1. Lightning is a high-voltage electrical 
  2. discharge between two charged rainclouds or 
  3. between a cloud and the Earth, caused by the 
  4. build-up of electrical charges. Air in the 
  5. path of lightning ionizes (becomes 
  6. conducting), and expands. The accompanying 
  7. noise is heard as thunder.
